About
Why we do this, what we believe, and why we're based where we are.
We started Skynetdesigns because we kept seeing good businesses let down by bad websites - sites that looked fine in the mockup, then took eight seconds to load, broke on a phone, or quietly lost enquiries for months before anyone noticed.
So we do things differently. Every site we build is coded by hand, not assembled from a stack of page-builder plugins or a theme a thousand other businesses are already running. That means it loads faster, it’s harder to hack, and it’s actually yours - no mystery dependencies, no “you’ll need to hire us forever just to change a paragraph.”
The consultancy side exists for the same reason. Most of the advice small and growing businesses get about their website or digital presence is either generic - copy-pasted from someone’s blog - or self-interested, from a vendor who just wants to sell more hours. We’d rather tell you the two or three things that will actually move the needle, and be upfront when the answer is that you don’t need us yet.
What matters to us
Plain answers over sales talk
If a feature won't help your business, we'll say so, even if it means a smaller invoice. If your budget is better spent elsewhere this quarter, we'll tell you that too.
Code you can hand to anyone
No clever tricks that only we understand. A different developer should be able to open the project cold and make sense of it, not need us on a call to explain our own shortcuts.
Fast by default, not as an afterthought
Performance and security get considered from the first line of code, not bolted on right before launch when it's expensive to fix properly.
How we work
Every project follows roughly the same shape. First we listen to what you actually need, then plan the structure and content before any design happens. Design and development run alongside each other rather than one waiting on the other. There's no black box in the middle of that, and nobody vanishes the moment the invoice is paid.
Why Somerset
We’re based in Somerset, and most of our work is with founders across the county - plus clients further afield over a call and a shared document. Being local means we understand the businesses we’re building for: a startup coming out of a Somerset growth programme or an enterprise centre has different constraints to a national brand, and we’d rather design for that reality than for a generic “best practice” case study.
